Given the state of the economy, it was not surprising that many respondents wanted a candidate who could represent their economic interests

Is it more important that a candidate represent your cultural or economic interests?

Among those who thought the Democratic Party best represented their economic interests, the overwhelming majority also felt the Democrats represented their values and beliefs. However, sixteen percent of those entrusting their economic interests to the Republican Party felt that neither party best represented their values and beliefs.

At the time this poll was taken, Hillary Clinton was most frequently identified as "very elitist," followed by Barack Obama and John McCain. Having taken accusations of elitism to heart, both Democratic frontrunners have since begun aggressively advancing more populist images.
